Street Market Report - July 7, 2013

A generally nice day. Not too hot, but not too cloudy.

We had a brief emergency in the park a little after 1pm. One of the illiicit drinkers started having a seizure and I called 911. I believe that he was taken away and is recovering. We have about 1/2 to one ambulance call per Sunday for these drinkers. This should only serve to convince everyone that a safe drinkers lounge is necessary.

We closed the street a little early this Sunday on advice from a member of the BEAT team, they felt that people were walking in the street already, and that it was safer to just raise the barricades.

For those that might be new to these reports, I'll go through our Sunday routine in detail this time...

1) 7am on Sunday, Jacek and I show up with two other volunteers to clean the park. This Sunday, it was Dominic and Clint who both did a great job cleaning the park and preventing the vendors from setting up too early.

2) 9am the RPICs show up. RPIC stands for Responsible Person In Charge, and this Sunday it was Lorna as #1 and Kevin as #2. Their job is to chalk out the areas in the park for vending and no vending, and to make sure the fencing is put up.

3) 10am - three guards, three marshals, and four tent crew volunteers show up for the morning shift. The RPICs gather all the volunteers in the police parking spot, fish out any jobs that are not filled, and walk the volunteers down to the Lux to get our equipment from the basement.

4) 10am - 11am - The tents are erected, and the tables are distributed to the vendors.

5) 11am  - the road is closed to traffic and the market is officially open

6) 1pm - the morning guards finish their shift, and the afternoon guards show up.

7) 2pm - the morning marshals finish their shift and the afternoon marshals show up.

8) 4pm - the 50/50 draw signals the end of the market day, and volunteers walk around and warn the vendors to start packing up.

9) 4:45 - 5pm - tents, tables, and equipment is collected in the alley and final warning is given to vendors on the street that the street will be opened at 5pm

10) 5pm - street is opened and equipment is returned to the basement of the lux hotel

11) 5:20pm - we begin washing the park and the street to clean area after the market as the clean up crew picks up trash and encourages the remaining vendors to leave the park area.

12) 6pm - park area and sidewalk of Carrall St. is clear of vendors and a small car-sized pile of garbage is collected in the police parking area

13) 6:30 - 7pm  - A scheduled garbage pickup by city engineering comes to remove our trash, and the park is left in a clean state as if the market had never happened.

This is our typical day. If anyone is interested in learning how the Street Market is governed and organized, you are welcome to attend our Saturday job meetings at 9am at VANDU, or our Street Market Committee meetings at 4:30pm on Mondays at VANDU.
