It was a decent market day.
A number of incidents bare mentioning and are illustrative of the difficulties that we face running a market at Pigeon Park.
Early in the morning, the police presence was dense. For some reason, they decided that a group of tourists from a cruise ship was worthy of attention and made the group of them produce IDs. They turned out to be Croatian and only had temporary visas from the cruise ship company. I guess the VPD's idea of policing is to harass tourists enjoying a street market.
Another interesting example was a police attempt to arrest someone for selling a stolen bike. Glenn, our RPIC for the morning told the police that they should phone in the serial number and check if it was stolen. It turned out not to be on the stolen bike registry and they let the guy go. This is a great example where the volunteers can encourage the police to follow protocol and not jump to conclusions.
A general consensus by vendors and volunteers at our Saturday meetings and at our Monday committee meetings is that the police need to treat our vendors the same as any vendor in the chinatown night market or at terminal. They need to give the vendor a receipt and an incident number if they decide to confiscate their goods and believe that they were stolen. I will try and write up a short information card for the vendors so that they know that they have the right to ask for these things.
A few videos collected before the market.
