General Report
This was such a beautiful day, it was hard not to be in awe of our little neighbourhood market on a day like today.
Starting at 7am, Jacek and I met up with Yesterday and Dominic to begin cleaning the park for the coming market day. This cleaning project is in cooperation with the Hastings Crossing BIA park stewardship and tool library initiative, and helps us make sure that the vendors do not set up too early in the morning. We held them off until about 9am this morning, which we feel is pretty good.
I've included a picture of Dominic cleaning in the morning.
A resident of the Van Horn came out at about 9:30am asking about the market, I gave him my name and contact info and invited the residents of the Van Horn to meet with us and discuss how to improve the market.
The special tent crew is working great these days. The setting up of all the tents now happens easily within the hour (between 10am and 11am), and quite often we close the streets early, since people start spilling out on to the streets and it is difficult for the volunteers to control. This is why we typically close the streets before 11am.
Today was a day of only minor incidents, mostly with a few trouble makers in the illicit drinker's area, but nothing that the volunteers could not handle.
It was a record day for fund raising. We collected over $300, which is the first time we have achieved this without bannock sales. Most of this is due to the large amount of cold pop that we sold.
The "Flowers for Food" group came back again for the second week, and they seemed quite happy there. This is exactly the kind of addition to themarket that we want. We are still hoping for Hastings Urban Farm to come back this season.
Brandon from Pidgin borrowed a table again so he could set up his soup line. He does this quite regularly at about 4:30 and helps feed many of the vendors.
We encouraged all the vendors that were participating in the Hope In Shadows photo competition to take pictures of the street market, lets hope we get on the Calendar!
The clean up went very well, with the help of Lorna and Jane, who both did an excellent job. The park was completely washed and clean of garbage by 6pm. The garbage truck came at about 6:30pm, and we were completely finished with a clean street and park before 7pm.
Some notable visitors to the market were:
Brenda Prosken - came by and bought a coffee, donated to the market, and walked around enjoying the market
Ken Lyotier - bought some 50/50 tickets and enjoyed the beautiful market day
