It was great weather again this Sunday.
No rain, and lots of sun.
Despite the cold weather, we had over 150 vendors at the park at noon, and we sold out of coffee and hot chocolate by 1pm. This might be a record. We make over 250 cups (6oz) of hot beverages every morning and we are now in need of another thermos and possibly an additional volunteer just to sell coffee and pop all day. These are the problems that success brings, so they are not so bad, as every small business owner would know.
It was Chinese New Year, and tons of people were out on the street at the parade. Welcome, year of the horse.
The Super Bowl was on in the afternoon, and this made the market peter out at just about the right time (3pm or so) and allowed easy clean up. Seahawks pummelled the Broncos, so all was well.
We had some early trouble with one vendor attacked another out of the blue. An ambulance was called, and the police interviewed the victim. The attacker ran off, but enough people saw the incident that we will bar this vendor from the market in the future.
At about 1:30pm I noticed a guy selling cheese outside of the main tent and told him to leave the market. The guy immediately started yelling obscenities at me and then lunged at me across the table. Luckily I backed up enough so he could not get to me. After I started yelling “assault, assault” he ran off. Later he came back, ran at some volunteers and I was forced to start yelling “911, 911”. He hit two female volunteers and then ran off again. The police interviewed me and some others and we did get a picture of him.
We had a large contingent of VPD at the end of the day (around 4pm) after their shift on Chinese new years parade ended, and this was welcomed. The people that attract the crowd and sell out of bags were scattered for a few brief minutes.
A number of things happened over the course of the week that I should talk about. We had a great meeting with our funder, and purchased 30 more tents for the market. We talked to some neighbours about using our space at 62 East Hastings for some art projects, and had a special meeting to look for gaming grants.
Hopefully more good news to come.
As can be seen by this report, we are in desperate need of more funding so we can provide the security necessary for an event of this size.
