Street Market Report - November 16, 2014

A brisk cold winter day it was in the aftermath of our municipal election.

Our two stalwart supporters - Sarah Blyth and Constance Barnes were leaving the Park Board regardless of the election results (both are headed on to fight in the Federal arena), so the playing field was going to drastically change on parks no matter what the vote count.

The Park Board is now majority NPA, with two Greens and one Vision, and the Council is slightly less Vision than it was before the election. How this effects the future prospects of our little street market? Who is to know?

Roland Clarke, however, received 7,545 votes. This, although a clear loss, represents a very decent showing for an independent (only one or two unaffiliated candidates polled higher), and an amazing showing considering that the only venue of the campaign was the Sunday market during market hours.

A brief scan of the support showed that it was broad throughout the city. No area was much more highly concentrated than any other. This, more than anything shows that this little street market receives visitors (and supporters) from everywhere in the city.

The market ran well today. Only one minor scuffle, nothing that our security force could not handle.

No major incidents with bikes or stolen items today.

The police did a few walk-throughs of the market, but no major problems that we were made aware.

Great job to all the volunteers again.

Every day in the DTES where we have a market is a great day for the people of the DTES.
