183rd market at Pigeon Park on Sunday
It was a sunny day, no rain. This is the good news. The bad news was that the temperatures were sub-zero all day!
Getting up at 6am and going down to Pigeon Park for less than minimum wage isn't hard enough (all the volunteers work for less than minimum wage), we had to contend with more bothersome behaviour from the Vancouver Police.
At about 9am, a squad car drives by and the passenger says "this market is really getting out of hand". When I asked the officer what she meant by this statement, she said "why are there people in the police parking area?". My response was "The police told us that it was ok". We have numerous discussions regarding the market with the Vancouver Police, and our liaison - Tim Houchen. It was the VPD that told us that it was ok to use the police parking area during market days. When the woman in the squad car asked us who told us this, we told her.
Then, she decided to mention the fact that the market did not start until 11am, and people should not be here setting up. When we informed her that in fact, the market started at 10am, and numerous VPD officers have urged us to close the streets early for safety reasons, she did not seem to have a response.
Michelle Davey - the board of the street market society is free to meet with you at any time. We are doing our best with very limited resources.
The rest of the market was very uneventful. No hospital calls, no fights, and the vendors were very well behaved. This was probably due to the sub-zero weather, but you take what you can get.
Financial Report
1) Tables/Tents = $73.00
2) 50/50 Draw = $29.75
3) Coffee/Pop = $104.36
Total Revenue = $207.11
Total Spending for the week = $184.11
(Spending was mostly at Costco buying more pop)
Profit for the week = $23.00
Vendor Count = 150 @noon

And there were a couple of articles in this week’s Courier one about the street market and one the Complaints Commissioner and police ticketing people in the DTES.
